I recently purchased a dvd-rw drive, and had burned both
cds and dvds without a problem. However now neither of my
drives show up under my computer. They don't read any
disks, and no software packages pick them up. They both
have power, and both show up under the hardware
mangagement tools as well as in the BIOS. In the hardware
tools there is an "!" next to both of them. I thought the
drivers may have been damaged by some software, however I
can't seem to get them to work. I've tried restoring my
computer to save points, used norton to fix any errors,
and uninstal/reinstal the drives. I thought it may be a
windows error, but can't put my winxp cd in to try to
repair windows since the drives won't work. If anyone has
any idea please send me an email or post it. Thanks in
advance.

This sounds like a case of there being registry references to 'drivers'
that either are not present or which do not work with XP. It is usually
wrong to try installing any makers drivers for a CD or DVD - just use
the extensions that may be part of any burning software package. To
tidy up, get a registry patch file, cdgone.reg, from
www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click on it and merge
it into the registry

You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you *do* use.
