My laptop crashes everytime I turn it on, it comes to a point where I have to
choose between "start normaly" & "start with previously known good settings"
and this goes on for about 4 times before Windows XP actualy starts, I'm not
an expert to know if it is software, hardware or just a virus causing this to
happen, I'm thinking of formatting the harddrive, can someone guide me
please......

Explain what you mean by "crashes"? Be specific - any error messages?
If so post verbatim. Describe exactly what happens when you start the
computer.

Also with the system running turn off automatically restart on system
failure. Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced | Startup and
Recovery - Settings. Under System Failure untic the box for
"Automatically restart. Ok out and reboot. If the system stops with a
blue screen write down and post the message on that screen verbatim.

Also check the Event Viewer for errors at the time the system problem
occurs. Go to Start | All Programs | Administrative Tools | Event
Viewer. Look in the System log for any entries marked with a red "X" at
the time of the problem. Same with the Application Log. Post that
information here too.

What happened before this problem occurred? Any hardware or software
changes? Have you done a thorough scan for malware using a combination
of programs in safe mode? Here are some links with info on dealing with
malware.

Hi,
I am new here, so be gentle.
I too have this problem with my laptop PC running WinXP Home. It has
really only occured since completely formatting, but took about 3 weeks
of use following the formatting before I got the occasional start up
glitches. on some occasions it will boot without any issues. Other
times it will cycle through and restart automatically. More recently it
will not start at all, simply giving me the option of choosing between
"Start Windows Normally", or "Previously known Good Settings". It times
about 20 seconds and starts with whatever is highlighted if no action is
taken.
On booting it shows the Windows logo, and then after about 5 seconds it
restarts, going to the black screen, with white type that offers the
choices above, plus "Start in Safe Mode etc".
Apart from hitting it with a hammer, any ideas.
Thanks heaps

This is either a hard disk problem (most likely) or both a hard disk
problem and a motherboard problem inside your laptop. Either way it
is serious and reading between the lines you probably formatted
because you had problems which probably started for the same above two
reasons.

it sounds like there is some damage to the data on your hard drive. if
you were using xp pro, i'd recommend running the chkdsk /r function
from the recover console command line...but, since you're not using xp,
i think you can put your xp home edition in the cd drive and there are
some sort of "repair" fuctions that you can run from the disk.

i'd look into it on the windows site.

you probably have malware that's damaged some sectors on your hdd.

Thank you for the informative replies, I appreciate them.
The computer had been working fine, but was perhaps getting clogged,
and the end usage changed. It was an opportune time to format, and
start again.
For a few weeks after this format it worked perfectly.
Then it occured infrequently, on startup.
Now it won't boot at all.
I will try the Windows repair system. It has not been connected to the
internet, apart from activating windows.
I'll keep you guys in the loop, and if you have any further thoughts,
please let me know.
Kind regards,
Gary BEAL
