hi , whenever i try to write dvd's or cd's my computer gets so far then
reboots of its own accord, when it sends error reporting its a "device driver
problem" i've checked all drivers in device manager to no avail. this happens
when i use xp utility or nero 6. please help.
yesterday it wouldn't even read a complete source disc before crashing, try
reading and writing from same drive and rom drive still the same.
Thanx in advance.

Thanks for the advice can you suggest any for a NEC3500ag as i cant find any
on the manufacturers site, just using standard xp drivers at the mo. thanks

I'd be interested in seeing Mark's response as well since I just
purchased the same burner. Since there were no drivers on the NEC
(www.necsam.com) website, and no driver CD was sent with this OEM
product, my assumption is it uses the standard Windows drivers such as
what you're currently using. I know that's the case with other DVD
burners as well. (I also have a Sony DRU-510A which expressly states
in the manual that Windows drivers are the ones to be used.)

I wonder if this might be related to firmware. I see there is a
firmware upgrade available on the website. Or quite possibly this is
related to Nero. What version of Nero are you running and is it
compatible with your version of Windows? (SP-1, or SP-2)

As you can see, I'm not any more help than Mark has been. But I think
if I had your problem, I might remove the burner, re-boot, reboot
again, and then re-install the burner to see if Windows installs the
drivers properly. (Perhaps the drivers just didn't take properly the
first time you installed. You might also want to remove the current
drivers from Control Panel>System>Device Manager between re-boots and
before re-installing the burner.

Also, there "seems" to be a decent online forum that may better
address this issue at http://club.cdfreaks.com/
http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86 gets you into the NEC
portion of the forum where you'll probably also see me since I'll
probably have questions to pose once I attempt to install this new
burner.

hi there, thanks for your interest, i first installed the burner a few weeks
ago and i have used it a couple of times but keep getting the same crashes so
yesterday i took an extra fan out of my pc , flashed the bios re-installed
nero 6 updated, and ran it again with slight improvement until i clicked
done. then all hell broke loose dr watson error, plus a few other win32
problems what a pain, anyway in general my pc runs reasonable on everything
else apart from burning, i have just turned auto reboot off so i get a blue
screen error that may shed a bit more light, i have noticed in system reports
an error for cdrom but no more info, you would of thought that an error
report would tell you which particular driver has caused a problem wouldn't
you, maybe thats asking too much of microsoft eh. oh well i shall battle on
regardless and i will check out the forums you suggested thanks, Dave
p.s i am sp2'd and no probs this crashing was occuring prior to that.

Sorry you're still having problems and hope I'm not as burdened when I
install this new burner. I've got a Sony Dru-510A which worked
perfectly until I installed it in a new machine I recently built. But
now it just won't write to a DVD. (It reads and writes CDs and reads
DVDs, but won't write to DVD no matter what I try. Worse, I can't seem
to find any help anywhere on how to effectively diagnose. All Sony
said was it will now cost $170 to repair IF it is found to need
repair. Since I only paid about $140 for the unit, you can see why I
ordered the NEC as a replacement. The "quality" of help and support
from Sony certainly drove me in that direction.)

There's also another forum in which you may find interest at

Undoubtedly you've done the right thing by turning off auto reboot. If
and when you find a solution I hope you'll report back here.

I haven't updated my Nero beyond 6.3 even though I just upgraded to
Windows SP-2. I've always found Nero a very confusing and difficult to
understand program but that may be because I've just never really
applied myself to a deeper understanding. I'm preparing to re-format
and re-install Windows and will install Nero 6.6x at that time. But
I've always wondered if there were problems with Nero (and InCD in
particular) that might be affecting my ability to burn DVDs. However,
I just have no way of testing the integrity of Nero that I know of.
