I am using Excel for a long time now and it always worked fine.

But one week ago it started to crash my whole system whenever I close
it. This even happens after a reboot with fresh memory and no other
programs open (to verify it's not due to lacking memory).

I deinstalled MS Office and installed everything anew but the problem
is still there. Excel always (!) crashes when I close it.

Does anyone of you have an idea how to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Christiane

Hi Christiane!

Possible cause is an overfull Windows Temp file.

Close Windows and re-open to ensure that any partly installed programs
have finished with the contents of the temp file.

To find your Temp file pretty quickly with either Operating System:

Start->Run
Type the following
%Temp%
Press OK

OR:

In Explorer for Windows 95/98 or ME

Find and Select C:\Windows\Temp File

In Windows NT/2000/XP

Find and Select C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\local settings\temp

Select all files and delete.

If you feel that’s extreme, just copy them to a new location before
deleting but remember that you can delete them later.

Try Excel again.

If that doesn't work, then it could be a bloated xlb (Toolbar) file.
Do a file search on *.xlb If it is much larger than around 50KB then
rename or delete it and then restart Excel.

Report back, whatever happens so that others can be guided by your
experience.

In fact, if it is an overfull Temp file, the deinstallation and
reinstallation of programs can make things worse.

Hi Norman!

Thank you very much for your valuable advice.

I tried both of your tips at once and Excel was fine again right away!

I have to admit that my TEMP folder was actually boasting with files
and also the xlb file of Excel was almost 10 times as big as it should
be at max (it was 950 KB!) although I have no idea why. I never did
any toolbar changes or similar things.

Anyway, without that overload Excel is running smoothly again.

Thanks again. You saved my day :-)

Best regards,
Christiane

Hi Christiane!

Thanks for thanks but more are due to the unknown soul who discovered
these tips in the first place.

For record purposes, what version of Excel are you using. I think that
xlb file bloat only hits versions 2000 and below.
