lately my computer has been automatically reseting itself.it only happens
once in a while but when it does it usually happens a few times in a row.its
not crashing it is just reseting.i have my system set not to reset if it
crashes.someone said it is overheating maybe.i opened it up and one of the
fans that says cpu cooler isn't spinning.i don't know if it just spins
sometimes or if it is supposed to spin all the time. The other fans are
working fine.there are no viruses and the only change i've made recently is
adding ram.my system is a amd atholon processor 1.4ghz 768mb ram windows xp
service pack2.thanks for any help.

The fan is supposed to be spinning all the time, and when it does not spin,
overheating, even destructive overheating, is the natural consequence. Since
these fans are pretty cheap, remove your existing problem fan and take it to
a computer parts store to get a similar replacement. Do not trust this fan
any longer, unless you wish to replace your CPU soon.
If you simply must use the computer, make sure the fan is spinning by giving
it a "startup" nudge if you find it stuck. Under no circumstances let your
computer run if the fan cannot be made to spin or if you cannot keep an eye
on the fan. Realize too that it may not be spinning fast enough even if it
appears to be functioning. I lost my CPU due to a faulty fan.

Ususally whenever a computer overheats, it shuts off. I haven't ever heard
of an overheated computer restarting. Think about it,what good would it do
the machine to restart in that situation? It's still not getting cooled
down. Still, I wouldn't completely rule that out. As for the fan itself,
keep the case open for a while and see if it starts spinning. It may be
temperature controlled. Another thing to check is if your antivirus and
anti-spyware programs are up to date. Also, does this occur after the
computer has been on a while, or within a relatively short period of time?
