How can I stop my PC, on XPPro, automatically going on-line at startup via my
broadband connection? This happens without my opening Outlook Express or my
browser.

Thanks in advance

What exactly do you mean with "going on-line"?

Hi Pegasus - it opens an internet conenction - broadband. Doesn't "go
anywhere" thouhg - just connects.

If you use an ADSL modem/router for your broadband
connection then you get a live connection as soon as
Windows is up and running. This is by design.

If you use an ADSL modem for your broadband
connection then you normally have to enter an account
name/password before you get a connection, unless you
have installed a mechanism that provides these details
automatically.

Thank you, Pegasus

When did this start happening. Do you get any window to show that a
connection is being made?

Does a dial-up window show up? This may be due to WGA, which is
automatically connecting at login to validate your system.
There are many articles all over the internet on this topic about Microsoft
installing 'malware' on everyone's system at the beginning of June.

If you get a window, check your taskbar, IMMEDIATELY, and see if you have a
button for the connection window with a icon like a star.

Or check the icon on the following file: C:\Windows\System32\WgaTray.exe

When this occurs, open Task Manager and see if WgaTray.exe is present.

Ah! Thanks Larry. I found and deleted WgaTray. Although my PC still goes
on line automatically at startup, this has solved another problem I was
having: the appearance of a window at startup syaing that "You or a prorgram
have requested info from go.microsoft.com", and asking which connection I
wanted to use. This has stopped since I deleted WgaTray.

Make sure you do not have Automatic Update set, or the next time around,
Microsoft will put it back.
Did you also remove the C:\Windows\System32\Dllcache version?

You can reset to Automatic Updates later after Microsoft sorts this out.
Until then, you will have to manually download.

My solution was to fix the data.dat file ... still monitoring the fix. So
far so good. You can download Microsoft's WGA Diagnostic tool to verify
your system is genuine and valid.

You should not be still connecting, if you fixed this. PC should not still
be going online.

Really now, THINK

He said he has a broadband connection.
He is connected to the network all the time unless he disconnects hi
hardware or pulls the plug. That is the beauty of a broadban
connection. You don't have to reconnect. It is perfectly normal fo
his computer to get "online" when he turns it on, and h
should be worried only if it doesn't. However, in the event that h
doesn't want to be online all the time, he shoould just disable hi
connection by going to My Network Places | View Network Connections
Then disable the active connection. It will stay disconnected whe
you turn your computer on again

Stev

Thanks everyone. I am not bothered by my going on-line all the time if it is
a "natural" thing for broadband to do. Was just concerned it might be a bit
of spyware. Thanks for your help.
