I have to undertake an audit of PC hardware and software for a company
with a number of branch offices - each maybe 10 - 20 PCs. Not all PCs
are networked. I was wanting to send a survey document to each branch
manager to complete and maybe a small utility they could run to
extract the info from each system. Not all branches have active PC
support on site, so the data-gathering would need to be simple -
straightforward.
The PCs are a mix of Win98 / W2K and XP Pro. I am unsure of the server
types.

Can anyone point me to a resource I could use - maybe a template form
(Word / Excel) and a small utility that could run off a floppy disk?

Ant help appreciated

I do IT Audits, and we don't send people paperwork to let them fill it
out... we do it ourselves... but we're a business.... here's what we
do in summary...

Nessus - www. nessus.com , register it, license it and use it.. it
does good vulnerability scanning.
GFILANGuard - does vulnerability scanning and does it well.....
.....These two products together will give you a good map of your
networks...

If the branches are not connected (which they are, you just don't know
it, because they HAVE to be, to be branches), there are ways to do all
this from 1 location....
If the sites/branches are not actively supported, then I suggest you
talk to the person who IS responsible or the person-in-charge-of-
IT....

IMO, you're asking someone to boil down years of expertise and
knowledge into a template, a small 'simple-straightforward'
utility.... and if that can be done, my 20 years of experience is
wasted...

I shoulda just came to usenet and asked, "hey guys, I've got a problem
that if you could solve, I'll make lots of money from, so just send me
the solution to (e-mail address removed) and I would appreciate any help you
provide... thanks"

Why didn't I think of that, coulda saved me tons of student loans....
Gawwwwsh....!!

Download Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com) and put it on a floppy to send to the offices.
Have someone install it on each machine and print out the resulting file.
Then have them mail the printouts to you.
Belarc will provide a complete inventory of the hardware and software on each machine.

I don't see where you specify Firewall audit, so I'm going to assume you
mean a resource audit - check Belarc, it will document EVERYTHING about a
windows resource, they have other software to document the network.

I apologize for my totally incorrect, unthoughtful post... BelArc does
most of what you want, and I didn't even think about it.... I need to
start using it a bit... pretty nifty...
