I customer of mine in the Denver Metro Area just bought a burned CD from
CompUSA. It contained:

one of the available blaster removal tools
MS's very own 823980 patches for both XP and 2K.

They're selling it for 19 bucks.

Nice...

Not a bad deal if you don't mind paying $19 for free
software... www.sarc.com has removal tool and MS has patch.
Zone Labs has the free firewall.

CompUSA is charging $50 if they remove the virus for you.

It might be fair. Depends on what their hourly charge is and what the
minimum is. I know one place that's charging $90/hr for labor...and most
places have some sort of minimum. Even a simple fix takes time putting the
computer up on the bench, checking paperwork, whatever. And running that
virus tool can suck up a bit of time, depending on how much it has to scan.
For people who don't know or don't want to know about fixing things, it
might be worth the money to be assured that the problem is fixed.

I'd bet you 1,000 shares of MSFT stock that Microsoft wouldn't even
care. Anything that helps them sweep this fiasco under the rug is a
welcome thing to them. This isn't exactly good press for Microsoft or
Windows.

Doesn't matter either way.

99.98% of the public [current XP users] will still buy the next MS
windows version.

The security hole is MS's fault, yes... But the Blaster worm is not... and
MS did issue an alert and patch weeks ago so it's not ALL their fault...
Besides... If people are going to continue using always-on internet
connections like broadband, they've only got themselves to blame if they're
not running AV software and firewalls....

Ah, I was hoping some dimwit would go into the "blame the victim"
argument again. Thanks for not disappointing.

Greetings --

Why? The patch *has* been available, free of charge, for a month
now. Why should Microsoft now have to bear the cost of producing CDs
to compensate for the laziness and/or inattentiveness of consumers?
