Use a vice.

Seriously, Don't, there's a huge performance penalty. Perhaps we can
suggest alternitives if you told us more about your system, and why you
want to compress the drive.

If you still insist it's

Windows Logo Key+e, Right click the hard drive, select properties,
select "compress drive to save space."

Expect a 20minute or more wait, depending on how much data you're
compressing.

Why would you want to compress the drive? If it's getting full then start
uninstalling applications you don't need.

Compressing the hard drive will give you addition space but at a price.
Performance can certainly be affected by hard drive compression.

To compress the drive just go to My Computer, right click on the drive you
want to compress and select properties. At the bottom of the properties
window (general tab) you will see an option 'compress drive to save disk
space' Click you mouse in the box next to this option to enable it, then
click Apply. The time it takes to compress the drive will depend upon the
drives initial size.

Hi gnc:

If one vise won't do the job, you'll have to call in the vise squad.

I second Paul's advice. What problem are you having that you think
compressing the drive will solve?

Thanks paulmd for your response. The reason I am trying to compress the D
drive is to increase speed and space. Each time I run AOL computer check up,
it tells me that my D drive is 85% full and needs compressing. However,
each time I try to, it won't allow me to (though it does allow me to compress
C drive). The pc is a piece of... Oops sorry, is a HP Pavilion a705w, if
that means anything. Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions,
it is appreciated.

As you've been told, compressing a hard drive is *not* a Good Thing.
Don't do it. Get a larger hard drive or get stuff off the one you have.
I just wanted to add that the AOL computer checkup is really a piece of
cr*p and you shouldn't use it.

You don't need third-party programs to have a well-maintained Windows
machine. You *do* need to do occasional maintenance, though.

Why?

If you need more space, they're putting 40Gigabyte drives as the prize in
the bottom of CrackerJack boxes these days.

GNK

well there ya go, the consensus is:
*DON'T compress the drive.
*DON'T rely on AOL for anything.
*Not mentioned yet but ... ALWAYS make a complete backup of all your stuff
before performing any deferred maintenance. And then stick to a regular
backup policy.

For removing/compressing specific files on a drive try the Disk Cleanup
utility first. --Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk
Cleanup.

You will likely still need to free up some space so backup onto external
media (CD, etc.), and then delete from your hard drive, any programs you
never use or use very rarely. The same with data files. If you are
uncertain what to keep and what to toss, you can create a folder called
"JUNK" on your desktop and place files and folders in there temporarily
before deciding to delete them permanently.

Good luck

Compressing an entire drive, in my view, is a foolhardy thing to do. What it
essentially does is put all your files in a single file. With an
uncompressed drive, if a small drive problem occurs, you lose a single file.
But with a compressed drive, because essentially the entire drive is now a
single compressed file, if any problem develops, you lose the entire
contents of the drive.

Compressing increases available space, but certainly not speed.

Each time I run AOL
computer check up, it tells me that my D drive is 85% full and needs
compressing.

Then don't run AOL computer checkup.

If you are short on drive space, buy another drive. They are very
inexpensive these days, and it's far better to spend a little money rather
than run the risks compression entails.

Sorry, but I'm kinda computer illiterate. What is a vice?

gnk: I appologize for paul's sarcasm. we all tend to do that in here
sometimes. He was referring to that thing with the big crank your dad had on
his workbench for squeezing (like compressing) things and holding them in
place.

Of course that will not help you. I suppose he was being humorous in an
effort to create an atmosphere of entertainment-- sometimes we learn best
when we are entertained at the same time.

PS it is spelled "vise" NOT vice. Vice is another thing altogether.

A vice is something like smoking, drinking, or taking drugs.

A vise is a device you find in a shop to hold materials steady while you
work on them. It holds them by squeezing them tight, hence the joke.

Yes it does. It means your computer came pre-loaded with a lot of stuff
you'll never need, or want. A good way to free up space is to uninstall
the stuff you don't use.

HP's usually come with larger than average hard drives, however.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions,
