compression ?

I am using a drive formatted in NTFS and using windows
2000. I have tried to compress both a folder and
individual files. There are no error messages but the
folders,files,drives "show" the same KB's/space after
compression as before. The folder or file
shows "compressed" under properties. Is the folder/file
being compressed ? If so, how do I know how much space is
available on the drive ?
 
R-click on the drive, select properties, see the line that says Free
space? Thats the space available.
