Is there a comprehensive list of Windows XP Pro junk file types? Where
might I find it?

David

Not sure what you mean by junk. One man's junk is another man's treasure.
If you mean files you don't need, that varies from one computer to another.

The only thing I can think of when you say "junk" is the stuff OEMs add
on, such as AOL, McAfee, etc.

What exactly are you referring to?

What's a junk file type? Open windows explorer, go to Tools | Folder
Options | File types tab for a list of all the registered file types.

While I haven't used CCleaner, I would caution against it. It appears to
remove a lot of temp files which are quite helpful. For example, your
Internet explorere is set up to retain temp files which helps load web pages
faster if you have been to them before. Thus, removing some temp files will
actually slow your system.

the fact that you have more files than you think you need (right now) is no
cause for alarm given that there is plenty of hard disk space on most
computers. Relax.

This is a stupid response.

Junk file types include any file types that are no longer in use--
created once like temporary files, for example, though there are many
other junk file types--or no longer necessary that just sit there
taking up space on your computer's hard drive.

Junk file types include any Backup files where you no longer need the
backups, Borland C++ temporary files, Help temporary files, Internet
Explorer Cache files, Lost Cluster files, Setup temporary files,
Visual Studio temp files, Windows Diagnostic files and so on.

The program I use to rid them, Hard Drive Valet, has the option to add
additional junk file types by name and extension so you can get rid of
as many as you know about. I was hoping some guru somewhere had
compiled a list of all the Windows XP Pro and other Windows-based
software apps junk file types so I could add them in and get red of a
lot more files of types that do nothing but sit on my hard drive and
perhaps adding to any bugginess, fragmentation, hard drive read-write
slow downs, etc.

Anyone?
