You may need to provide more context for your question.
Corel WordPerfect, for example, has as an alternative (non-default)
file format called 'compound document' format (actually
a use of the Microsoft OLE compound document capability),
but Word is also in that realm, where the definition is
a file format that maintains content, layout and structure
in a single file, (i.e. .doc or .rtf)
