I have my address book set up by name, but when I put a
name in the "TO" field, by clicking it then clicking the
addressee I want, the email address goes into the "TO"
field. I want the proper name to go there. How do I dow
this?

thx

Post your Outlook version when you have a question. There are 7. Each
behaves differently in this regard.
In most, you must change the Display Name field for the Contact in question.

Russ - Sorry; Outlook 2000, SP3. I've already tried changing the display
name. For instance, if you put in a first and last name in the "first"
and "last" name fields, the "display name" field automatically defaults
to that. So...I tried removing the last name from the "display" field,
because I want to show only names in the "to" section, not email
addresses. When I change the display to only a first name, it shows up as
only a first name in my address book, where I want the first and last
name to appear. I can't seem to find a solution.

thx - sam

That's not how you change the display name.
In a version that old you may not be able to. You also need to post your
mail support mode for us to know. Line 2 of Help | About.

Line 2 of Help/About in Outlook 2000, says "Internet Mail Only, Security
Update". Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there is a way to
display a proper name. Where would you go in to do that; that is my
question. thx again - Sam

Not in IMO mode. It provides no access to the Email Display As field. You
cannot configure it.
