Smiling Bob

Hello out there. Maybe I can get some advice in this newsgroup.

I installed Windows XP Pro on my computer last September. It works great.
BUT, I have a problem when I try to install components that I didn't
include in my original install (like FAX, IIS, etc.). The program asks me
to put my CD in the drive, and then I get error messages that say it can't
copy file so-and-so, EVEN THOUGH IT IS THERE. I click RE-TRY, and the same
thing happens. I hit BROWSE and I SEE the file right there on the CD. Still
says it can't copy it. I skip the file and the same thing happens to the
next file that comes up. What gives? It seems that there is a problem with
any file name that ends with an underscore (e.g. filename.dl_ ). Can
anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

(A previous email exchange with an MS support person got me the advice to
re-install Windows. No friggin' way! I can't wipe out all of the work I
have done over the last 8 months. BTW, I have also tried the REPAIR option,
and it did not help. Geez, I'd really like that fax function.)

Probably your CDROM lens needs cleaning or cdrom replaced.
However, try copying the entire program to your hard drive.
Right click it then left click properties.
Change attributes to archive of all items from main folder.
Check that temp folder is empty before you start.
Pathway should be:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp"
Or change administrator to the current user name.

The CD works fine (as do all others) because when inserted, the Windows
Install screen comes up.

Your idea is interesting but how would I "copy the entire program" from
the disk if I don't know the file names associated with that particular
program?
