Ok, I've got an older desktop with XP Home and a new laptop with XP
professional. I've got the internet hooked up through a wireless router, but
then plugged into my desktop (desktop doesnt have a wireless card). my
laptop is online via the wireless router.

i've tried going through the network setup function under the Control Pannel
but I'm getting no where. I made the "workgroup" but the two computer's
won't let me connect to one from the other. I THINK I understand how to
share and use the network once it's up, but I can't get it up to begin with...

ANY advise or good websites that has a GREAT walkthrough would be appreciated.

When you ran the Network Setup Wizard, did you select Option 2, "This computer
connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or through a
residential gateway.", for both computers?

Let's take a look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer,
as a start. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely:

Chuck,
This email includes all of the information your email requests. I'll
restate the problem first (to refresh your memory, if not, just skip down).

Just bought a new laptop and a wireless router (has XP Proffesional). Have
tried to connect my old desktop (XP home edition) to ... and I've tried both
the "Network Setup Wizard AND the Wireless Network Setup Wizard. At one
point, one computer seemed to be acknowledging the other's existance but I
ended up getting an error message. And yes, to answer your question, I did
do the "Hooked through a residential network" with both computers. it didnt
work, so then i tried doing my desktop as the "main" computer...it wouldn't
let me...

This is the browstat for the laptop:
Status for domain CJS3 on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{94A356ED-12C2-4EB9-A645-E340B3AB0870}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.

And this is thee browstat for the desktop
Status for domain CJS3 on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{A2CFD6C3-379E-4EC4-A821-C44902DC4FC2}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master browser name is held by: CJS3DESKTOP
Master browser is running build 2600

(i also just realized that I think both computers may have the same name,
CJS3...is that an issue?)

You say in your letter that browstat can produce a lot of info, but
practically NOTHING came out of mine. Is there something I need to be doing
differently? Thanks for all of your help

Chuck,
Was this all of the information you needed? Not rushing you, just didn't
get a response and wanted to make sure it wasn't because of something lacking
on my end...

Jimmy

Jimmy,

Your browstats aren't as complete as they could be, but what they don't show is
significant.

Both computers appear to have basic ip communication. Neither has any
gratuitous protocols (neither browstat or ipconfig shows anything interesting).
Name resolution "Hybrid" and "Unknown" are no problem.

The two names ("CJS3Desktop" and "CJS3Laptop") are sufficiently unique. No name
conflict there.

Something is stopping browsing between the two computers. They're on the same
logical / physical segment, so check both computers for misconfigured /
overlooked firewalls, and for registry setting restrictanonymous.
