Compatible Graphics Card

My Gateway computer (848GM) purchased just a few month ago has incompatible
graphics chipset (915G) for Vista Aero graphics. Can this chipset be
upgraded to the compatible 945G on the motherboard? Would installing an
additional compatible card (like ATI Radeon) work? Would installing
additional graphics card have detrimental effect on performance of my
computer?

I'm assuming your computer has its graphics chip on the motherboard.
Does it have a PCIe slot available for one of the more modern graphics
cards? If so, that will certainly improve things. Not only do you
benefit from a better graphics card, but you don't have to share system
RAM. If you do install a new card, you will have to go into yur BIOS
settings to disable the onboard chip.

If you do not have a PCIe slot or AGP slot, then the chances of finding
a PCI graphics card with a chipset that supports Aero, gets pretty slim.

You cannot just upgrade the chipset, you would have to upgrade the whole
motherboard.

If you add a separate, compatible video card, sure it should support Aero.
It would disable the onboard video, and it actually will improve the
performance of your computer. It will have it's own memory and not have to
rely on CPU and system RAM.

Yes I do, but the subsequent posts have answered my questions. Like it or
not, I will have to buy a new graphics card and use up the only PCI slot I
have left in the box. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your help, it answered my question perfectly (although your "nom
de plume" scared me a little).

Thanks for your helpful answer to my query.
