I just upgraded to XP from ME. It doesn't recognize my scanner. I have
uninstalled all the software from it that was recognized and tried installing
the whole thing from scratch. Most of the software installs but not the
scanner. I can't believe it's not compatible. Any ideas?

You can also try using the built-in Windows XP software if you do not have
an HP CD or are unable to download Windows XP software for your Scanjet
scanner.

Follow the instruction listed below to install your HP Scanjet product
using the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) drivers that came with the
Windows XP operating system.

1. Shut the computer system off.
2. Connect the scanner to the computer using the USB interface cable
or the parallel cable.
3. Plug the power cable into the scanner and connect the other end of
the cable to an electrical outlet.
4. Turn on the computer system.
5. After Windows XP has finished loading, push the green scan button
on the front panel of the scanner. A New Hardware Found icon will
appear in the lower-right corner of the computer screen.
6. Please wait while the software necessary to run the scanner is
loaded. This process may take a few minutes.

I was able to download the new drivers from the site Mike posted. Before
upgrading to XP I was having difficulty with getting the computer to shut
down completely. This is one of the reasons I finally upgraded. Now, I can
only restart and not shut down at all. Guess it wasn't my OS. I will try the
built-in software to install a scanner. I haven't tried that yet. I have high
hopes for this solution. When my computer isn't working properly it is
unsettling. I appreciate your suggestion.
