Why would Norton Anti-Virus 2005 recommend turning off the XP Firewall? Is
this a good idea?

Warren;
Since Norton AV is not a firewall, it is a bad idea to turn off your
firewall unless you already have a replacement.
Do you have Norton Firewall?
If so, disable Windows Firewall.

To avoid conflicts and error messages, it is recommended
that you only use one firewall. Attempting to use two firewalls
will not accomplish additional protection.

Thanks for your responses. I thought it was odd that Norton Anti-Virus
recommended turning off the XP Firewall. I could understand them wanting you
to do this if you were installing the Norton Firewall but not their
Anti-Virus. I didn't purchase their Firewall because I knew there was one
built into XP and was afraid they would conflict.

Does anyone know of problems with the XP Firewall? Is the Norton Firewall
somehow more effective? I hope not - if I had known I needed the Norton
Firewall I would have bought them together as a package and saved money over
buying them separately.

Norton; firewall is many times more effective than Microsoft's. MS firewall
is inbound only, while NPF is inbound and outbound. Plus, the NPF has
intrusion detection built in, and a feature that will turn itself back on if
you turn it off to play an online game and forget to turn it back on. NPF
is much more configurable than is MS, and uses a common interface with NAV.
The firewall from MS is a very weak form of protection. You are much
better off getting the NPF.
