Compaq Evo acting funny

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me out. First, I noticed that I cannot
"Open" any folders by the usual double-clicking. When I try to open a folder
(i.e., My Music), the "Search Results" page with the Yellow Dog companion is
the window that opens - not the folder containing the files I seek. The only
way I CAN open my files is to right-click and select "Open" from the
right-click menu. As a matter of fact, "Search" is in bold and at the top of
this menu - "Open" is listed several options later.
I have tried setting "Open" as the Default settings in File Types (Tools ->
Folder Options -> File Types -> select "Folder" -> select "Advanced" ->
select "Open" -> select "Set as Default"). I have also tried System Restore,
to restore my computer to a time before this problem started occurring. No
such luck.
I am starting to notice that the computer is acting funny, running slower,
taking longer to start up... and also, the weirdest thing has happened now!
I cannot remove Panda TruPrevent Personal - When I do so, I get this error
message: "Error extracting support files; The system cannot find the file
specified."
I have gone into MSCONFIG -> Startup and unchecked unneccessary startup
applications. There is a Panda Software application that I just CANNOT SEEM
TO DISABLE OR DELETE - it reappears every time I uncheck it in MSCONFIG->
Startup!!! The application is called "avpxdwin.exe," and it is a Panda
Software application (I tried an evaluation version of Panda TruPrevent
Personal and uninstalled it - I wonder if my System Restore somehow screwed
up the uninstallation??)
I do have HiJackThis, and can post a log if needed.
Does anyone have any idea what the heck is going on here??!!
Any help, suggestions, advice, etc, would be greatly appreciated.
Yes I know Panda Software is a 3rd-party application and I am on a Microsoft
forum. But I feel that the problem is MICROSOFT-related, because it's basic
Add/Remove Program and MSCONFIG utilities are not working to solve my
problems. As well as the whole Open/Search Results problem I described
earlier.
In advance, I appreciate any help, advice, suggestions... and thank those
who reply.

Oh forgot some info in case the Tekkies need it
Win XP Pro SP2
Compaq Evo (about 1 year old)
Pentium IV
1.99 GHz, 248 MB RAM
40 Gig HD, 23 Gigs free
Running Spybot S&D and AVG 7.0 Free Edition
Cable connection, through a wireless Linksys router
Configured for maximum security (or so I thought)

Again, if a HiJackThis log is needed, I can post one.
Thanks in advance -- Please Help!

Michael, it worked!!! YAY!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

BTW...any thoughts on the Panda Problem??? Any registry editing I can do
there, to get THAT blasted thing to go away?

Sorry, once I read the gist of your main problem I just skipped the rest
to make my reply. I think I would try installing it again, then
uninstalling it immediately. Otherwise I can probably post a list of the
file and registry changes it makes.

Just wanted to ask before I try it - Do you think Panda will LET me re-try
the evaluation version, again? Should I just put in different information?
(Like a friend's name, address, email, etc...) when registering?
Again, thank you, thank you, thank you...

Well, let's just say that when I downloaded it a moment ago, I gave then
zero real information. They only want that for their marketing
department.
