Compact Complications

I was told that the compact database can erase records if two users are in
the database simultaneously ie. one user accesing records and another user
selecting compact/repair.

can anyone explain why? and what work around can be used.

As far as I'm aware you can't copact and repair unless you are the only user
with the DB open.
