Compact and Repair runs forever !?!

I'm having problems with my back-end Access 2K database. I have the latest service packs of Access and Jet
When I run 'compact and repair', I get an hourglass and it runs forever. In Task Manager it shows no activity for msaccess.ex

Anyone have a clue what is happening
I have never successfully been able to compact and repair this database

I also have similar problems with my front-end database.

You might want to try creating a blank database and then
importing all the objects from your back-end into it.
Compact/Repair it, and if that works, change the name.

I tried that, it makes no difference. I still can't compact and repair it.
