Compact and Repair Freezes

Recently when I try to compact and repair my 2003 database it starts to
process and just freezes. No messages just freezes halfway through.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem.

Make a backup before anything else.

Where is the database located? I've noticed horrible performance if I try
to use Access from my desktop to compact/repair an Access database file
that's located on a LAN server.

Is your database "split" into Front-End and Back-End? If so, which are you
trying to C&R?
