Using Excel 2000
I have a value in a cell (20860)
I clicked the comma (,) on the toolbar to apply the comma
style. It changed the value to 20,860.00 and aligned it
to the right. I decreased the decimal places so it's a
whole number. Then I attempted to align it in the center
and it will not align to the center. Does anyone know hy
this is happening?

Thank you for your time

Karen,

In another cell :

On the MenuBar, Format > Cells

1. Number Tab. Number Format. Set settings.
2. Alignment Tab. Vertical DropDown. Set to Center.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, compare the settings between your original method with what I
suggested. There should be a difference in the Number Tab (Custom
Setting).

Hi Karen,

Clicking that "comma" put the cell in "Accounting" mode.
If you want your number to read 20,860, and align as you
state, go to Format/Cell....click on "Number" tab, set the
format to "Number" with decimal set to "0". While there,
click on the "Alignment" tab...you can set both horizontal
and vertical alignment from there.

HTH,

Comma style is just that....a style.

You can modify it under Format>Style>Comma>Modify.

The Number option defaults to Currency which cannot be centered.

Change that to Number or General.

In Alignment option use centered.

May be just as easy to format as Number with no decimal places rather than use
the Comma Style.

You seem to be right, but try the menu.

Ctrl +1, Alignment tab, centre, Number Tab, choose Custom
and in the custom dialog box type #,##0 then click OK this
should give you the format you want.
