Comedy of Errors - Win XP installation

I installed Norton SystemWorks and browsed through it
then found that I couldn't access the virus detector to
do it's job so I decided to uninstall and reinstall.
That was my first mistake or maybe my second (first being
installing SystemWorks in the first place.)

We have two computers. They are networked. My older PC
that I installed Norton on is master for the network. I
have broadband through Comcast.

After uninstalling Norton I discovered that in the master
PC the light for the modem was lit in the bottom right
bar (system start?) but I couldn't access Internet. No
previous problems at all.

So, I figured that Norton had somehow deleted something
critical and figured that by reinstalling Win XP I'd
restore missing files.

Started installation but it stopped with this warning in
a box at the point wher I was "Installing Windows,
Registering Components"

The box said: UNREGMP2.EXE entry point not found.
The procedure entry point GETIUMS could not be located in
the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL.

I attempted to rety and to cancel. Neither command
worked. I was simply stuck at that point, couldn't exit
the installation and couldn't go on.

Now, I am trying to reinstall or do anything but I have
rebooted to my system WinXP disk and it appears to start
to reinstall, going through part of the process, but
hangs at a black screen with only the mouse pointer which
will move around but nothing more. I can't go forward,
can't go back. All I can do is reboot and try another
option though they all seem to end the same way.

What do I do now? An fdisk or something and lose all of
my files? I would just like to finish the installation
of Win XP and every time I reboot the computer says that
it is going to complete installation, but it stalls at
about the same point each time.

Is there any way to start all over and simply reinstall
WinXP without losing existing files?

Help, please. I'll be up for a couple more nights trying
to fix this damned thing which I'd like to toss out the
window right now.

have you tried the repair option instead of reinstall? other than that I
don't know of a way to save your files. maybe someone else can help more.
