After my daughter borrowed the laptop the optical drive doesn't recognize any
of the discs in the drive. When I put a disc in, the LED lights up, I can
hear it spin up to speed, slow down and speed-up again then nothing.
Sonly doesn't list ANY drivers for the drive, let alone new ones.
Please help,

Are you describing "Auto Play" facility that brings up the Actions box
or simply the fact that the media disks are not readable (Explorer) >?
Optical drives are handled natively by XP and do that require any
3rd-Party drivers. It's also possible that AutoPlay was disabled by
your daughter while using the notebook. You might want to just do
a System Restore to a date/time before she used it.

I wish it was just the autoplay function. I can't "see" the disc that is in
the drive when I check the "My Computer" screen, let alone play a CD or DVD.
My daughter had the notebook for over a year and I don't think the "Restore"
function works, but I'll give it a try tonight.
Thank you

There is a big possibility that the drive is dead... the laptop drives are
sensitive...
and they dont last long.. I had a similar problem....

So dont get mad at your daughter... it could have happened anyway..
the drives have moving parts and they dont last forever.

You can try uninstalling the Drive from the Device manager and restarting
the laptop, the drive will be found again and re installed... but that does
not mean
it will be able to read the disks if the optical part is damaged.

If the problem is permenant you can change the drive.. it costs around 60$
(I am not in the US so the prices me vary). However since you will be
changing it ask if you can install a DVD RW on the laptop.. it will cost
more, but you will be able to WRITE dvds too!
