Combo Box doesn't show all records

I have a combo box based on a query from one table with one field, when I
enter the first few characters it doesn't go to the entry in the list. It is
sorted alpha and bound to the one column.
If I run the query the the text I'm entering is there.
There are 66,000 records in the table.
 
Maximum number of items that can be displayed in a combobox or listbox is
65536.
