Dell Laptop C610 Windows XP Pro SP 2

I need to connect to some legacy equipment using com ports 1, 2 or 3

When XP Boots, it assigns virtual ports to devices starting with 1 (I think)

If there are 2 or three devices, it will then assign any device that is
plugged in after the boot to com4. The device driver is looking at ports 1,
2, or 3 and doesn't communicate.

Is there a way to assign a specific com port to a device that is always
there to like com4 or some other port, so that com1 or com2 can be free
after boot?

Would the legacy device then pick up a free com port with a lower number
than the last used port?

TIA

Yes and no - it depends on your BIOS. Go into your BIOS and see if you are
offered configuration settings that will allow assigning COM ports - or -
settings that will allow certain devices to hold ports which could be
configured to not use a specific port or a different port - freeing the port
they are using which is commonly COM 3.
