Under Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Ports: COM2 was set
at 9600 bits per second.

Under Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Modems: the modem
port is set to COM2, and the maximum port speed is set at 115,200.

Would this difference cause slow internet site loading?

Sorry if this is a "doh" question. My new computer set up has been painfully
slower than my old one (with only 128 Mbyte RAM), despite the new one having
four times the RAM (512 Mbyte RAM), for one thing. I just happened on this
"port setting" discrepancy and so increased the first setting above to
115,200. I think things are now faster when I'm online, but I am not sure if
I nailed the problem.

The slowness was particularly noticeable when building my web site using
Earthlink's site builder.

TIA for your community service.

I don't think that setting makes any difference.
Are you sure that a program wasn't downloading automatic updates?
How long have you had the new computer?
Is your modem part of the motherboard or a separate card?

I rarely permit updates. Also, the slowness was pretty consistent over a few
weeks. I have had the computer almost four weeks. The modem is an external
4.5 year old Zoom V.92 USB.

Post any thoughts on this, and I'll explore. It's a learning process, plus I
realize rarely are there quickly-identified solutions.

Meanwhile, I'll post back if I continue to sense improvement.

Your new computer has default settings to download Windows updates and so
does most of the software.
You have to turn each program's autoupdate off.

For the archives: Downloading and installing the Firefox browser, and using
it instead of Internet Explorer, has sped up my internet site loading and
switching enormously.

http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ for the browser.

All I can tell is that when I check "Connection," "Status," it appears over
three times as many bytes are being sent and received now. This is despite
the connection speed being unchanged at about 49.2 Kbps.
