Wes, again thanks for the research you are doing into this. My PC
(HP) came with Windows XP Home Edition already installed. I am in
Australia, so I am not sure if there are differing version in XP HE,
however it had the Appmgmt.dll. I suspect that the plural version
(Appmgmts.dll) is XP Pro specific. Why I have been pursuing the
errors is because about 50% of the time you boot up specific
applications wont start. Some at least provide an error message of
sorts, others just don't start - the pointer becomes an "Egg timer"
and then simply returns to a pointer with no application running and
no messages. Since I reinstalled the COM+ thing and with the
resultant situation whereby Appmgmt.dll was no longer available with
a number of applications returning the application management service
error, I followed your advice and researched and researched. I
eventually managed to send an email to MS and very promptly received
a response with advice on how to go about things. It involved a
number of steps, the 1st being to remove SP2. To that end there were
reasons given and a link to an MS site. This provided the relevant
insructions which I followed and which removed SP2. Once having done
that I had to reboot the PC at least 5 times with different results
(hanging, lots of start up errors etc) but finally I managed to
reboot and have the PC in a reasonable working order. Step 2 was to
check on preinstallation requirements for SP2. This resulted in a
further six or so steps most being quite onerous and many didn't work
(due to nview.ddl errors - a new error for my system). My virus
checker also suddenly found about 5 virus ?didn't detect any prior to
this? One of these steps involved visiting the HP site which led to
a series of more steps including 6 HP driver updates. Once I
finished all those (about 20hours in total effort because step
involved a reboot) the PC finally started behaving itself. Much of
the functionality I had lost with the SP2 upgrade (inc setting
restore points) finally worked again. Step 3 is to download SP2
again because theoretically the PC is now SP2 ready. I haven't done
that yet. Interestingly, I still have the same Appn Mgmt error.
However I have "tricked" the PC into thinking it is OK by copying
appmgmts.dll and renaming it. With that done all the apps work. If
I remove it, they don't. BEATS ME! Once I have reinstalled SP2 I
will post the results.

Appmgmt.dll does not seem to exist. I do not have it on my machine
or on my XP Pro CD or my XP Home CD. Not even a compressed version.
A search at DLL Help Database
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/servicedesks/fileversion/dllinfo.asp
brings back: No results found. Microsoft seems to never have heard
of Appmgmt.dll
There ain't no Appmgmt.dll. ;-)
I did find this reference to Appmgmt.dll...
[[The Application Management service is not supported in Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition and the Appmgmt.dll file is not included
with Windows XP Home Edition.]]
Adding or removing a program may generate Event ID 7023
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=328213
Black Viper suggests that you disable the Application Management
service if you have XP Home, until installation of Service Pack 2.
I see that you have SP2. Hmm...
There seems to be a spelling problem, because it's APPMGMTS.DLL.
APPMGMTS.DLL = Software installation Service
APPMGMTS.DLL lives here >>>
C:\WINDOWS\system32
and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
APPMGMTS.DL_ the compressed version of APPMGMTS.DLL is on my XP Pro
CD. APPMGMTS.DL_ is in the :\I386 folder.
APPMGMTS.DL_ does not exist on my XP Home CD. That part seems
correct.
[[Appmgmts.dll is an MMC extension to gpedit.dll that provides
settings for Software Installation Group Policy.]]
That explains why it does not exist on XP Home. gpedit.dll is not
available on XP Home. Gpedit.msc is not available on XP Home.
gpedit.dll = GPEdit
gpedit.msc = Group Policy

I have every COM+ and DCOM item disabled. I get errors in the Event
Viewer. Big deal.
If you do not have any COM+ Applications installed, disable the COM+
System Application Service.

Wes, Thanks for your info. I followed the various pieces of info on
the sites. I did follow one suggested resolution which I think fixed
the COM+ prob. (The solution to the COM+ prob was to run a couple of
cmds from the Command Prompt and then go to Control Panel Add/Remove
Programs Windows Components). However, since then I have now a
problem with the Appmgmt.dll. I checked that on the MSKB only to
discover that it is a known bug, there is a fix, but I don't qualify
for support. My OS came with my HP box. This Appmgmt.dll problem
has occurred before, but after a reboot appeared OK. Now however,
even a reboot doesn't fix it - I therefore checked the contents of
Windows/System32 and sure enough, there ain't no Appmgmt.dll.

Lately - since SP2? - I keep getting this error.
The COM+ System Application service terminated unexpectedly. It
has done this 3 time(s).
I have tried MSKB but cannot seem to get an answer.
