Columns in a text box

Is it possible to have columns in a text box?

If you insert a text box and click the Format menu, the Columns item
is grayed out. I'd take that as a gentle hint. :-)

It is possible to fake it, though. It depends on whether you want
parallel entries across from each other, or continuous "snaking" text.

For parallel entries, insert a table inside the text box. If desired,
turn off the table's borders (Format > Borders & Shading) so it isn't
obvious.

For "snaking" or "newspaper" columns, insert two or more smaller text
boxes inside the first one. With the insertion point inside the first
of the smaller boxes, click the Create Text Box Link button on the
Text Box toolbar; when the cursor changes to a pouring cup, click in
the second smaller box. That can be repeated to chain all the boxes
together. When text fills the first box, it will spill over into the
second, and so on.

I'm not sure which version of Word was the first one to allow nested
text boxes like this, but I know it works in 2003.

Thanks Jay. I have used WordPerfect where text boxes accepted columns. But
your method of "faking" it works very nicely in Word. George
