Colors don't display right?

So another odd problem... I have a girl who discribes her display as anything
that should be white being displayed as teal. I've done most of the normal
things, had her reboot a few times, set the theme back to windows classic
(killing all display prefs, i hope), asked her to login to the local computer
instead of our network, and she has the issue no matter who she logs in as,
checked to make sure she is in 32 bit color. The really odd thing is that
when she takes a screenshot and send it to me the colors look fine, which
tells me it's likely hardware however the fact that only the white is teal,
all the other colors are fine seems to contradict that... any ideas of what
mgiht have done it or steps to try in fixing it?

Thanks,
mc

Connect a different monitor to see if it is the monitor. Then change
the graphics card to see if it is the graphics card.

Is it still under a warranty? The chances are, it is going to cost a
lot more than getting a new laptop from DELL!! Laptops are not
something that can be repaired by a novice even if you can get the parts
for them.

My local PCWORLD don't have anything for laptops - no HD, no CDs, no
memory modules! I am surprised they are still in business!

Yep, still under warenty. She just called me and told me that now what should
be black is red, so tomorrow I'm going to make sure the driver is current as
a last chance then ship it back to Toshiba... give that white then black
died, I'm thinking a wire somewhere, maybe the whole graphics card? I was
just wondering... hoping... that it was a software/os thing that was easy
enough to fix... guess not... thanks for your help, though!

Good idea. Let them sort it out. Laptops are very difficult to
repair. I have got a DELL Inspiron 2600 about 5 years old and to change
the bios battery, I need to open virtually the whole laptop before I can
reach it!!! Very bad design!

What she calls "teal" we'd probably call "cyan". Computers can show
three colors: red, green, and blue, everything else is a combination
of those. To make white on the screen, all three colors are shown,
cyan is shown by displaying blue and green, no red. So my hypothesis
is that whatever controls the red part of the display is not working
right. Black is achieved by turning off all three colors - but on her
computer the red continues to show when all three should be shut off.

Checking on the driver is a good idea, but this looks like some kind
of hardware malfunction to me.

Finally got a chance to look at the machine today... the red is providing
some sort of a shadow, basically a ghost of the image shifted a couple pixels
over which is throwing things off. Sent the machine to our Toshiba guy for
repair, but thats for much for the explainations and your help!
