Hello!

It seems that, when talking about free backup programs these 2 are
often recommended in this NG. What are the advantage and disadvantage
of one upon the other?

Karen's Replicator does a great job of copying files from one loacation
to another, but it doesn't compress them. This is not a problem for me
but others have said that they prefer compression. All I want is to
copy usuable files from one drive to another and not to backup the
entire drive and OS.

That's not a fair comparation. Cobian's does MUCH more than Karen's.

Cobian Backup can "replicate" files and directories to some other place
like Karen, but it an also:

a) Compress the sources using zip64 or SQX (or 7zip in the comming
version)
b) Backup to FTP
c) Backup ftp sites to local discs
d) Backup ftp to another FTP
e) Encrypt using strong methods (Blowfish, DES, Rijhdael)
f) Remote backup
g) Events before the backup begins/after the backup ends
f) Works as a service.Install and forget it.

I mean, it's like comparing Notepad to Word. Kare has a great
application, but Cobian's does waht Karen does and MORE.

Karen's is a great program, but Cobian is today the must complete

For me, the only advantage of any of Karen's software is that she
releases the source, so I can make it do what I want, in the way I
want it to do it.

Otherwise, each one is best suited for the purpose it was written for
- and they were written for different purposes.
