How do I do this? When I close the lid, the computer
shuts down. I have an external monitor connected and
want to keep the computer running with the lid closed.

Open XP's "Help and Support" and type: HIBERNATION , and hit
enter. Click on the topic titled "Manually put your computer into hibernation".

Jim,

You should be able to control, from a power management
perspective, what a machine does via the Power Options
Control Panel Applet. On the Advanced tab you have
options for what you want the machine to do when you close
the lid...
There are also IBM power management device drivers that
can be install which will give you additional PM features.
