I'm using Outlook 2003 in XP Home. Frequently when Outlook is opening, I
get an error message that the Personal Folder did not close normally and
then there is a slow checking process. What is it that I am not doing to
exit Outlook so that this doesn't happen?

It appears that Outlook isn't closing properly. See if something here
helps:

Thanks, but none of those condition apply.

Perhaps, but clearly you have something causing Outlook to keep that file
open past the point it should be and the the most likely cause is some kind
of add-in or an application that has its hooks into Outlook somehow. You
can try to track it down by logging into WIndows while holding down the
Shift key, which will prevent all Startup items from running. (You can see
all these items by clicking Start>Run, entering "msconfig" in the Open
field, and clicking OK. Examine the Startup tab and note what Windows
attempts to start at login.) Then start Outlook by itself. If that
succeeds, close Outlook and start one of the programs listed in the Startup.
Start Outlook again, close it, and restart it. Keep adding items from the
Startup and you may eventually find the culprit.
