Closing files

When I have one file open and try to open another one in Word, the first once
closes automatically. I cannot have more than one file open at the same
time.

Are you sure it's closing? Perhaps you have Windows in taskbar turned off?
Tools-->Options, View tab. Make sure Windows in taskbar is checked.
