My wife and I share the same computer with separate profiles. We have a 4
month old new HP computer with an AMD Athalon processor and Windows XP Home
Edition. She is usually the last on the computer in the evening and turns
everything off on the computer before coming to bed. Lately the computer
will not turn off. The desk top remains on but the icons are not there. The
cpu cannot be turned off either by pushing the on/off button. The only way
the system will turn off is to unplug the surge protector where everything
is plugged into. Anybody have an idea as to what the problem may be? Thanks
for listening.

The chances are there is a program hanging at shutdown. You should be able
to press & hold in the power button to get the PC to power off (usually
about 4 secs).
Have you installed anything recently, that is what could be stopping the
shutdown. It could be spyware/adware causing the problem, try Adaware from
www.lavasoftusa.com or Spybot from http://security.kolla.de/ you would need
to download & install the programs to clear the problem. Do them one at a
time then try shutdown.
I'm afraid it could be trial & error to find the cause.
You could also try "system restore" to a date before the problem started,
just be aware that will remove any programs installed or system changed made
since that date. If you know when the problem started then try system
restore first, but the two applications I mentioned earlier are still worth
installing.
