Closing Applications

With Win XP when I open 2 word docs I get 2 entries on the task bar as
I do when I open 2 Excel spreadsheets. But when I close them (using the
close app button at top right corner) they behave differently. For word
it closes only that doc but for Excel it closes all spreadsheets. This
can be annoying when you've got lots of spreadsheets open. Is this a
bug or can you change its behaviour so it treats both applications the
same?

Thanks

Could be and old but known issue (Single vs. Multiple Document Interface)
depending on the version of Office you have:

Microsoft Word 2000 is not capable of supporting MDI (Multiple Document
Interface), MS Excel 2000 and PowerPoint 2000 are capable of supporting MDI.

Microsoft Office XP programs, including Microsoft Word 2002, are capable of
supporting MDI, but this option is turned off by default. See Microsoft
Knowledge Base article 291313.

For more information about MDI or SDI see Microsoft Knowledge Base articles
230684, 224717, 291313 and 220288.

Thanks for reply. Unfortunately KB articles do not answer what I'm
trying to get to. Both Word and Excel use SDI which is fine. The
problem I'm having is that they behave differently when you click the
close button (top right). In Word it just closes that document and
leaves others open. In Excel it closes all spreadsheets.

btw I'm on Word/Excel 2003 SP1.

Thanks
