Closing a word attachment in Outlook - closes all open word docume

Is there a setting, other than using Outlook as your editor, that will make
this stop happening?

Outlook 2003. I have several computers with the same issue. The users are
clicking on the x to close the document which was attached to the outlook
email. They are not clicking the X to close Word.
