Close Outlook 2003 using the tray icon...

Is there any way (registry key, etc.)to make an "Exit"
or "Close Program" option appear when you right click on
the tray icon of Outlook 2003? Its really annoying to have
to maximize Outlook just to shut it down.

Well, thats pretty stupid then. If they're going to make
a tray icon available they should make if fully
functional...If any Microsoft programmers read this,
please implement this feature because it makes perfect
sense to have this functionality...I'm sure that I'm not
the only one who would use it.

Just hit Alt+F4 when Outlook is in focus.

:>Can't be done.

Speaking of the tray icon, why doesn't it disappear when one exits
Outlook '03? This tray icon is worthless when OL03 is open, and when
one has exited OL03, right clicks on the tray icon and selects "Open
Outlook"-- the error message "OL is not responding. blah, blah,
blah..." is received.

On an unrelated note, If I reboot my machine and start OL03, it will
check my email accounts instantly. After that (and until I reboot
again), each successive initial opening of OL03 does not result in an
initial check of email but rather a delay until the first incremental
check ("check for messages every X minutes").

Thanks,

If the tray icon isn't disappearing then Outlook isn't really shutting
down. That would also explain why your initial check doesn't work
again until after you reboot. Open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete)
and see if Outlook is still listed there when either of those symptoms
appear.

If something is keeping Outlook open it probably is some synch
software or a COM addin or Exchange addin you are running. Look in
Tools, Options, Other tab, Advanced Options, COM Add-Ins and also in
Add-In Manager to see which ones are running. Some older addins and
synch software are known to cause those problems if not updated for
Outlook 2003.

Hi Ken -- I've the same problem with Outlook not unloading from memory after
exiting it. I unchecked all the COM add-ins and those modules listed in
Add-In Manager, but that didn't solve it (so I rechecked them all). I'm at
wits end -- exiting Outlook in this fashion seems to preclude me saving any
settings that I may have made...

Try starting Outlook in safe mode and see if the same thing happens.
Open the Start, Run dialog and type Outlook.exe /safe then Enter. See
if you can exit cleanly then. Some addins may not show up in those
lists if they are installed to HKLM instead of to HKCU (a so-called
administrative installation). That prevents the addins from being
listed in the COM addins list.

You would have to look in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Outlook\Addins to
see if any addins are installed that way, using the registry editor.

Hi Ken -- I just launched OL2003 in safe mode and that didn't do it. OL2003
still remains in memory. I'm trying to avoid closing the program to
minimize the possibility of PST corruption (occassionally upon launch, OL
indicates that it's fixing the PST). Considering that there was chatter
about this during beta, I can't believe (not really) that Microsoft hasn't
addressed this.

Are you running any synch software for a PDA? Those can keep Outlook
memory resident and older versions might corrupt a PST file. I don't
have that problem in any of my 3 Outlook 2003 setups. However, I have
run into some crazy things where some of my Exchange mailboxes were
touched by the beta bits, to solve those problems I had to discard the
old mailboxes and create new ones.

Another thing to try if you were using the beta is to create a new
profile and see if that helps.

No, I don't own a PDA. The only sync software I have, which is only enabled
when needed, is Sony Ericsson's version of XTNDConnect PC for my cell phone.
The OL beta was completely removed (much by hand) before installing the
release version. I even disabled your attachment options, but that didn't
do it, either... :-)

Ken,

This was the culprit for me... If one is running ActiveSync,
regardless of sync frequency option (i.e., continuous, manual, etc.),
and the Pocket PC is connected, OL will not close.

Yes, I was told that changes were made in Outlook 2003 in that
behavior. Previously when you closed Outlook it closed regardless of
whether something like ActiveSynch had first started an Outlook
session or not. Now if it starts an Outlook session the session won't
be closed unless you remove the PDA from the cradle before you
manually shut down Outlook.

Any other addins installed? Or anything else that integrates with
Outlook, such as anti-virus email scanning? Anything like that can
prevent Outlook from closing properly unless the code was updated to
work with Outlook 2003. Another known culprit is WinFax Pro.
