I've installed Microsoft Windows Embedded Studio but it is asking to connect to a DB (I think). I've ordered Sean Liming's XPe book (waiting for delivery). But in the mean time, I need to know how to copy/clone this "tweaked and locked down" image. Is there any type of step-by-step process that I can follow since I'm new to this OS?

I'm sure that I am still missing a piece of puzzle. I do not have a "FBA" directory nor does my Microsoft Windows Embedded Studio (Target Designer) work because "Target Designer cannot connect to the component database at "jeff", ect, ect. What the heck am I missing?

Now I know that your going to tell me that I need to install another program or something, but I have not been able to find out what I'm missing. Are there detailed instructions or a step-by-step document?

Jeff,

I believe the subject of your post is what is causing the problems. You have not even gotten your development system ready to go, much less gotten to the point of cloning/copying an image. When you do the install of your XPE you need to also install the database, not just the tools.

Take a look at http://msdn.microsoft.com/embedded/xp/getstart/howtos/default.aspx and give the documentation a read.

OK, that's the problem, these units came pre-installed, there are no CD's, hhmmm, sounds like somebody is trying to save some money.

Let me follow-up with my vendor. I feel "come to Jesus" meeting in the air!

Thank you,

What do you mean that your units came pre loaded, do you have a thin Client?
Because then you will need to get their files if you want to re engineer
their XPe OS. Not many Thin Client companies, send out CDs for you to
reimage their devices or as a restore, most of them use that as a revenue
stream anyway, you know pay to upgrade or reimage etc.

However if you want to clone the XPe image that you have on your devices pre
installed you could use Ghost to dump it into a network folder or onto
another Hard drive.

Jeff,

If it is any kind of thinclient then you can very well make sure, you
wont be able to get the image except of few personal fronts ;) .Sorry
to say that, but then if it is your curiosity over making of an image
then I guess you hould have a try getting the evaluation copy.
