What I assume you mean is that your original WinXP
refers to its own partition as "Local Disk (C
" when it
runs its Disk Management utility, and the original WinXP
calls the root of its file structure "C:". And now you want
to put the clone in another partition on the same HD or
in another partition on a different HD.
The technique is just go ahead and do it. The clone
WinXP will call whatever partition it's running in "Local
Disk (C
", and it will call its root "C:". It wil rename
other partitions to accomplish this, and those names
will be valid as long as the clone is running. When the
original WinXP starts up, it will call its partition "Local
Disk (C
" and it will call its root "C:" and rename the
other partitions. All this is OK as long as there are no
shortcuts within any partition that refer to other partitions
which might be renamed.
If you plan to dual-boot between the two WinXP OSes,
you will have to edit the boot.ini file in the Primary partition
marked "active" on the HD which is at the head of the HD
boot order. The *default* HD at the head of the HD boot order
is the Master on IDE channel 0. Hybrid SATA/PATA systems
select the head of the HD boot order differently. In both cases,
though, you can usually adjust the HD boot order in the BIOS
via keyboard input during the initial phase of boot up.
