Client cannot access applications on server (peer to peer) after server upgraded

I've posted this inquiry on the security, general, and networking newsgroups, and no help. I may be to dumb for anyone to mess with, or the question may be too hard to solve this way. My last shot

Background:
1. Two computers on LAN, workgroup. Works fine. Both use XP Home (OEM)
2. My PC, the satelite (I guess, on peer to peer the other one has the data files), crashes and I buy an IBM laptop to replace it. The laptop comes with XP Pro. The network continues to work fine
3. I upgrade the main PC (where all the data files are located) from Home to Pro
4. I cannot access two important programs anymore over the network--an accounting program and a case management program. I can access the wordprocessing files on the main PC, and I can print to the printer attached to the main PC
5. I called the accounting software company, where I pay for support on an annual basis, and the guy said hire somebody who knows computers--the support folks at the application company can't help me. He says this problem is common after upgrades from Home to Pro

Can anyone lead me to a fix for this? I've spent hours on the Microsoft site and the support sites for the two applications in question, and I've studied an expensive book I bought, and I can't find anything to help

I would appreciate any help. And if the answer really is hire somebody, I'll take your advice

Thanks

Thanks very much for your reply. I finally figured it out. I couldn't get into the server's programs file, even though I have full mapped drive access to its hard drive (I have learned about program files in Pro during this process). I went into the program files folder while sitting at the server, and noticed that the files I needed were not shared, so I made them shared, and it now works. This trial and error is tough, and I appreciate you and the other guy who responded on a different group. I really would like to take a course in DOS again (I took one when v. 4 came out), and it windows and networking. Anyway, thanks again.
