If I leave the pointer over a link for more than a couple of seconds, the link
is activated.I have to be very wary of what i'm doing or I can choose options
or travel to exotic links without wanting to.Can't I just place the cursor
over a link,or a drop down menu and know that nothing will happen until I
click,PLEASE.I'd even wash Bill Gate's feet (if he'll travel) if I can get
back to at least this one aspect of XP.

In the topic title, you mention "New Notebook is Vista." I suspect that the
problem you are having is due to the touchpad settings, rather than Vista.

I'm pretty awful when it comes to using touchpads. I've recently set up 3
Dell notebooks, all with XP, and I had the same problem.

There are settings in the Mouse/Pointer applet in Control Panel that will
allow a user to point on a link, or a file -- anything -- without anything
happening UNTIL clicking.

Isn't there a Windows setting that allows for a folder, link, etc to be
opened if the pointer has hovered over it for a selected period of time?
I can't find the setting right now. It's not in mouse options or folder
settings. Maybe it was taken out of Vista. Anyone remember?

Almost Crying.

Please check the following
Open Computer, Select Tools menu, select folder options. On the General
Tab, there is a button that says: Click Items as follows. Is this set
to double click to open?

Probably your touchpad settings. Go to Touchpad and uncheck the "Tap to
click" option. With that checked, even a slight tap on the touchpad can cause
the equivalent of a mouse or left-button click. If you uncheck that, it will
stop happening.

Thanks all ! In control centre:mouse, I disabled tapping and tap zones. This
probably works on its own?but just to be safe I also decreased double click
to the slowest and decreased touch sensitivity.Maybe I have some tapping
tick I'm unconscious of!Thanks again for the numerous helpfull replies.
