I'm running 2 pc's on a home network. Both are XP Pro.
I've figured out how to share folders and files. I've told the folders to be
shared, but do I ALWAYS have to drag those folders into the SHARED DOCUMENTS
in OTHER PLACES in order to access these folders from another computer?

One more question: Is it possible to run a program on compter "B" that is
only installed on computer "A"? I've tried on one program and get a RUN TIME
ERROR 339.

Thanks for any help,
Phil

Hi, Phil -

If simple file sharing is enabled on the XP machines your choices are
somewhat limited - but if you go into Control Panel --> Folder Options
and disable simnple file sharing you can create network shares pretty
much wherever you want. One caveat, though; if you disable simple file
sharing you'll need to set up matching user accounts and passwords on
both machines.

On your second question, most of the time it's not possible to run a
program installed on a different computer, because the program will
look on the local machine for its support files and regustry entries -
and since they don't exist on the machine where the program's not
intalled the program will normally fail.

Hope this helps -

You can right-click and share a folder and access it directly from the
other computer. There's no need to drag it into Shared Documents.

On the other computer, the shared folder should automatically appear
in My Network Places. If it doesn't, click "Add a network place" and
browse to it.

You must disable simple file sharing in order to share these folders:

Program Files
Windows
individual users' folders within Documents and Settings

I agree with Allan Grossman's reply. This isn't generally possible.
Thanks for any help,
Phil

Steve and Allen,
thanks for the info. But when I right clicked on a file to share, the other
computer could not see that file unil I drug it into SHARED FOLDERS on the
main pc.

Thanks for the help.

You're welcome, Phil.

Did you look for the shared folder in My Network Places and use "Add a
network place", as I suggested?

Are you using some file sharing software other than what's built into
Windows?
