Clearing Ghost Image a Problem.

A 17gb Ghost(rel 9.0) image file was successfully created
and stored in a NTFS partition on a winxp2 pro os.
When I deleted the file, free space was not returned to
the disk properties calculation, but missing ok when
I did a "select all " and looked at the properties calculation.
All measurements were done after cleaning the recycle bin.
Then:
1: I Added a 19 gb game dir to disk. New storage
amounts were recorded ok to actual and disk
property calculations.
2: Removing games dir. from disk also diminished
actual and "disk property" usage amounts by 19gb.
3. I measured all usages after clearing recycle bin.

Only deleted Ghosts images are not subtracted
from any of my NTFS disks' property calculations.
The only conclusion is that winxp is not properly
handling very large single files. It has no problem
with large Dirs. ( I realize I must have a glitch somewhere).
As another mentioned I checked my "atapi.sys" and the release
is 5.1.2600.2180. Will anyone hazard a suggestion please.
I'm very frustrated having to reformat every time I run
out of space with less than max usage amounts actually saved.

As the "King of Siam" says "It's a puzzlement" for those
old enough to remember the "King and I".

I answered my own question. I can add files much greater
than 2g, but can only delete files 2g or less. There has got
to be a document or option somewhere that can handle
this quandary. Any suggestions please. TIA
