HELP!!!
I have spent most of my morning trying to do a clean reinstall of xp, but am unable to do so. Have followed most of the advice given in other columns to date. Here is what I keep running into...

I have gone to the bios and changed it to boot up to the cd-rom, the install comes up, i follow instructions, but when it comes to the part about deleting the partition I am unable to do so. There are two partitions, a 8 mb, and then the main partition. The main partition is the one i want to delete to do a clean install.
When I say I want to delete the partition a screen comes up and say
Setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the selected partition. This partition contains temporary setup files that are required to complete installation
So what do I do now?

This 8MB section is unmovable, untouchable. Ignore it; treat it as though
it did not exist. Concentrate on the other portion. On a 80GB HDD, this
8MB is only 0.0001 or 0.01% of the whole disk. You have clicked the wrong
button so allotting this 8MB portion to be the new partition, to be
formatted. Not allowed!

Followed this pictorial instructions:

Bee;

Excellent advice.

However, the Shangrila is a:
Restaurant in Grayson, Kentucky. (Good food!)
Defunct Motel near Anderson, Missouri.

thank you, but that does not answer my question.
It's when i choose the Large partition to delete and reinstall is when I get the message
i have never tried to do anything with the smaller partition
was just stating that it was there. sorry for the confusion.

I am sorry the message got cross-wired. You wanted to *re*install the
WinXP. And you went ahead to delete the main, larger partition. When
you made the choice, an error message appeared stating that the partition
selected contained temporary *setup files*.

If the BIOS had done its job correctly, the only partition that contained
temporary setup files would have been the smaller/smallest one. So the
obvious question is: Are you positive that you did select.(i.e. highlight)
the large partition? In fact, in your description of this setup, there was
no need to move the highlight; the larger partition would have been
highlighted when this page opened. You needed only to press the "D"
key to delete. Normally this would be followed by another page
requesting a confirmation from you. Then"C" to create a partition.
Then "Enter", after keying in the partition size wanted in MB, and
so on....

Please read the pictorial instruction links again. Pay special attention to
deletion of the old, occupied (by the incumbent WinXP) partition(s). Do
click the graphics to enlarge them for identification that you did, or did
not, have the same screen pages. Look at the Elder Geek's web page.
Enlarge Fig.06. You may have more than one occupied partition here
of the existing old configuration. Just make sure you delete (clear) all to
end up with one single *un*occupied space.

Post back to this thread if you have difficulty. Good luck.

If you again get the same error message when you select (for deletion) a
partition other than the smallest one, i.e. the one containing the 8MB,
then, unlikely as it may seem, the BIOS is defective: the firmware in the
CMOS of the motherboard needs to be replaced; the CMOS needs to be flashed.
If you haven't done this kind of operation before, it can be tricky; so be
prepared to leave it to a professional.
