Clean Install

When you run a clean install, does this automatically delete everything first
or is there a step you have to take to get all the crap off before you
install?
 
A "clean install" involves deleting all existing drive partitions,
creating a new partition, then formatting the new partition.
This procedure effectively wipes your drive clean of all files
prior to installing Windows XP.

One more question on this... should I then go to microsoft and get the
updates since my XP was purchased in 2002?
 
After installing Windows XP, visit the Windows Update web site
and download Service Pack 2. After SP2 is installed, perform the
