I have an HP machine that HAD Win ME on it. I installed XP Home over it
some time ago. Now things are slowying down and I would like to get a
clean install.

I am sure that I will be asked to insert previous version of Windows
because my XP is an upgrade.

I have the master Restore disk for the HP. Will it find the Win ME on
that disk?

Next, My wife and I use different log ons in XP. How do I get our OE
Address books and emails backed up to replace on the new install?

Thanks,
Fred

Since you only have the restore disks, your options are limited. I have not
tried this because I don't have the CD media to duplicate your situation,
but I believe you can boot from the XP CD and from setup you can delete the
current XP partition and setup will then create and format the empty space
for a clean install. The downside of this is you will not have access to
your bundled application that are available when you restore to the original
configuration. You would need to purchase and reinstall any application
bundled with the original system if you wanted to continue to ue it.
If you need the compatible application included with the Me bundle, you will
need to restore to original shipoped stat then remove everything you don't
want carried to the XP upgrade before running the XP upgrade.

.
I have a similar problem and have tried pretty much
everything; here's my situation:

My Gateway computer came with Windows ME installed. Of
course the Windows ME operating system CD-ROM is not
a "seperate" disk, it's included as part of the "restore
system" CD's from Gateway.

So, here's my question; I want to do a Fresh install of
XP, but XP asks me to insert the previous "qualifying"
Windows CD to verify eligibility for upgrade, but my
Gateway CD Restore Disk is not recognized and that's all I
have. What can I do???

After checking out the Gateway web site, it looks like you have no
alternative but to reinstall back to original shipped state; unless you have
a Windows 9X/Me CD that is currently not installed on another computer. If
you do use the latter option, you will not have access to any bundled
software that would carry over from an upgrade, as I doubt you can do
selective installs and especially to a different OS.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
