if i purchase the xppro upgrade pack can i do a clean
install of xp on my pc?

i.e., will it only ask for the 98 os disk to check that i
have it or will 98 have to be installed on my pc to do the
upgrade?

this has never been clear to me. thanks.

Yes you can do a clean install (preferred method) and you will get a prompt
to insert the 98cd to verify a valid upgradeable version of windows.

As long as the Win98 CD that you have is a retail CD or an OEM CD that
contains all of the normal Win98 setup files, you can insert the Win98 CD
when prompted during XP's setup. No need to preinstall.

On the other hand, if your Win98 CD does not contain the standard setup.exe
and Win98 installation CAB files, you will have to install Win98 first. If you
want to do a clean install of XP, start the installation from within Win98. Do
not select the Upgrade option. Instead select the advanced customized
options and choose new installation. Since XP's setup has already "seen"
Win98, you will not be prompted later on for the Win98 CD.
