I must format my hard drive to eliminate conflicts caused by old OS files,
drivers, etc. Is it possible to do a clean install of XP using the update CD
I have that updated from W 98 SE? Thanks for any responses.

YES..........there are two ways to do this
ONE...if you have the old OS installed just boot up with the XP CD in place and
start the installation.Pick New installation and during the install process
chose to format the drive that you are installing XP onto
TWO...If you have previous OS on a CD for verification purposes during the
install you can format your HD before hand with a 98 boot floppy

Joe are you referring to the Update Disk that was available for a nominal
charge that basically converted Windows 98 First Edition to SE? If so that
disk will not satisfy XP Upgrade. It was just a set of patches. However if
you have a Windows 98 SE Upgrade CD then it will work. If the Windows 98 SE
CD has the words Upgrade on it then you are OK. But if it says Update then
no.

Yes. The requirement to use an upgrade version is to *own* a
previous qualifying version's installation CD (with an OEM
restore CD, see below), not to have it installed. When setup
doesn't find a previous qualifying version installed, it will
prompt you to insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just insert
the previous version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything
proceeds quite normally and quite legitimately.

You can also do a clean install if you have an OEM restore CD of
a previous qualifying version. It's more complicated, but it
*can* be done. First restore from the Restore CD. Then run the XP
upgrade CD from within that restored system, and change from
Upgrade to New Install. When it asks where, press Esc to delete
the partition and start over.

It's quite possible to perform a clean installation using the
Upgrade CD, provided you have the true installation CD for the earlier
OS.

Simply boot from the WinXP Upgrade CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. The Upgrade CD checks to see if a qualifying OS
is installed, and, if it finds none, it asks you to insert the
installation media (CD) of that OS. Unfortunately, an OEM
"Recovery/Restore" CD will not work for this purpose; you must have a
true installation CD, complete with the "\Win98" folder and *.cab
files, or the "\i386" folder of WinNT/2K.

Alternatively, or especially if all you have is an OEM Recovery CD
for the earlier OS, you can even start the upgrade from within the
current Win98/Me/NT/2K installation, and still elect to perform a
clean installation, to include formatting the drive. In this case,
there's no further request for the qualifying OS's installation CD,
because the installation routing "remembers" that you started from
within the qualifying OS. This process is more time-consuming, but
you get the same results: a clean installation of WinXP.

Ken: Sorry if my subject is not related to what you wrote Joe, but I am
desparate. I have Windows XP installed. I was trying to open a download,
but could not get it to open from my desktop. Each time I tried to open the
download I got a message saying, "The Windows Installer Service could not be
accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the
Windows Installer is not correctly installed." As for as I know neither
situation is applicable to my system. How do I tell if either applies, and
how do I correct to get download to open. Email a reply to
(e-mail address removed). Thank You.
